The Fault in Our Stars, written by award-winning author and popular YouTube vloggerJohn Green, is essentially a love story between two teenagers in various stages of cancer. The title is taken from Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar: “The fault, dear Brutus, is not in our stars, but in ourselves.” This suggests that no matter what we as mortals do, we cannot combat fate. Nothing known to science can fully prevent cancer. Its narrator, Hazel Lancaster, was diagnosed with Stage 4 Thyroid Cancer, and love interest Augustus Waters is in remission from osteosarcoma. Both carry visible reminders of their diseases: Hazel must wheel behind her a cartridge of oxygen for the sake of her “crap lungs” while Augustus limps through life with a prosthetic leg to replace the one amputated.
